Local artists gathered together Friday and Saturday evening to exhibit their work and hopefully sell a few pieces.

The Duncan Art Guild hosted its annual Holiday Miniature Art Show in the Duncan Regional Hospital health education room.

Approximately 30 artists were represented in 112 displayed works, which covered several genres including oil, pastel, water color and wood carving.

Lou Baggett, event chairwoman, said interest in the show has begun to grow again.

“This is a bigger show than we had year,” Baggett said. “We had quite a few pieces that sold and when painting sell, people tend to put more in.”

Jesse J. Bell was one of the artists present at the event. He earned an honorable mention for an oil painting named “Peggy’s Cove”.

For him, and many other artists, the show is a great way to display their work and compare it to what others in the area are doing.

“I’ve liked painting, drawing and all that stuff since the fifth grade,” Bell shared. “I started all that back then and I’ve been doing off and on ever since.”

But more than just giving artists an opportunity to show their skills, the event also allows the public to purchase works they enjoy.

Fran Boyd and her husband, Charles, know what it is to appreciate local artists. Fran said she owns a small collection of work done by the local guild.

“It’s just fun to have a picture and you know the person,” she explained. “I like things that I can tell what they are.”

For Charles, the enjoyment comes from gaining a deeper understanding of the person putting the pencil to paper.

“It’s good to see what different people you know, what comes out of their mind and goes on the canvas,” he said.

First, second and third place awards were given out, in addition to four honorable mentions and a Best in Show award.

Collen Robinson earned the first place spot with an oil painting titled “Adobe Shrine”. Second place went to Lou Baggett for a watercolor painting entitled, “Lizzie”, while third place went to Marty Childers, for an oil painting named “Dos Casas”.

Three honorable mentions were awarded, in addition to the one Jesse J. Bell earned. Wayne Miller received one for his wood carving titled “Old Timer”, Sonya Ables photograph, “Headin’ Home” also earned the honor and Yvonne Evans received the mention for her oil painting titled, “Dos Burros”.

Best in Show went to Rhonda Nixon for an oil painting entitled, “Red Flowers.”
