Oil painting(an oil painting; a painting in oils)is a kind of drawing that used those oils (linseed oil, poppy oil, walnut oil and so on) mix with paint to create on flaxen cloth, cardboard or plank. The diluter which used in painting are volatile turpentine and dry linseed oil and so on. The paint that adheres on pictures has strong hardness, after picture be dry, it can keep gloss for a long time. The Oil paintings is a mian style of western drawings.
Oil paintings origined in Europe 600 years ago and was invented by Dutch in about 15th century is a kind of painting that used linseed oil to make the paint and draw on cloth or plank which had been dealed with. Because oil paint will not change its color after dry, and many colors mixed together will not be dirty, so that painter can draw plentiful and lifelike coloration. Oil paint is opaque, and with strong covering power, so painters can draw layer by layer, from deep to shallow, cover them gradually which can make the picture have a third dimension. Oil paintings is suitable for creating those great works like broad scale, and epics.Becoming the major drawing mode in western drawing history, now the existent western painting works are mainly oil painting. Most of the fresco works were also made by oil paint and painting pattern. In the late 19th century, because of the development of science and technology, many new material were used in Oil paintings area, like Acrylic paints, paint and so on.
